What To Pack For Burning Man (And What I’d Bring Again)
If you’re heading to Burning Man in Black Rock City, let me save you some trial and error.
This isn’t a generic “festival packing list.”
This is what I actually brought, used, and would absolutely bring again.
Burning Man is not Coachella. There are no vendors. No last-minute Target runs. You’re living in the desert for a week. Wind. Dust storms. Cold nights. Brutal sun.
Here’s exactly how I set up my camp.
If I had to do it again, I’d pack lighter — but smarter. I created a no-fluff essentials list based on what actually worked on the playa. No overcomplicated survival gear. Just what matters.

Building Your Camp (The Most Important Part)
Before anything else — start with a strong visual. Think Temple at sunrise. The Man lit up at night. That’s what you’re packing for.
Your shelter setup matters more than anything.
⛺️ TAILI Inflatable Camping Tent
Instead of fighting poles in 20mph wind, I used the TAILI Inflatable Camping Tent with Pump.
Inflatable beams instead of traditional poles = game changer.
- Setup was fast.
- Solid structure in wind.
- Way less stress on arrival day.
Would I bring it again?
Yes. 100%.
⛺️ UNP 8 Person Tent
We also had the UNP 8 Person Tent for extra space.
Even if you’re not filling it with 8 people, the extra room matters. Burning Man gear expands quickly — coolers, bags, costumes, food bins, random stuff you collect.
More space = less chaos.
⛺️ Screw-In Heavy Duty Tent Stakes (16 Pack)
Desert lesson: regular stakes are useless.
The heavy-duty screw-in tent stakes were critical. The playa ground is hard-packed dust. You need something that actually bites.
Pair that with:
⛺️ Ratchet Tie Down Straps
For canopy and tent reinforcement.
When a storm hits, you’ll be glad everything is locked down.
⛺️ 10×10 Pop-Up Canopy + Ground Tarp
Do not skip this.
Shade is survival.
We ran a 10×10 pop-up canopy and paired it with a 10×10 tarp for flooring. That tarp layer reduces dust, defines your space, and makes camp feel more livable.
Camp Infrastructure That Made Life Easier
These weren’t flashy — but they mattered:
✅ Pop-up camping chairs
✅ 6-foot folding banquet table
✅ Storage bins
✅ Dry boxes for outdoor cooking gear
Bring at least one or two heavy-duty storage bins (the black/yellow Home Depot-style ones work great). You’ll want dry storage for food and anything sitting outside.

Sleep Setup (Because You Actually Need Rest)
Burning Man nights get cold. Colder than most people expect.
🛏️ Inflatable Air Mattress
Desert ground is not forgiving.
I brought an inflatable air mattress and it made a massive difference. If space allows, get at least a full-size mattress. You’ll sleep better and recover faster.
Also don’t forget:
- Sleeping bag
- Extra blankets (it does get cold)
- Pillow
- Sheets if you want to level it up
Sleep quality = energy all week.
🛏️ Basics Bath Rug (The Unexpected MVP)
This sounds random… but hear me out.
Originally I thought about putting it outside the tent.
Instead, I placed a small bathroom rug inside the tent entrance, which helped reduce tracked dust inside.
Cheap. Simple. Worth it.

Cooking & Food Setup
Burning Man is self-reliance. That means cooking.
🍳 Portable Gas Grill
Easy meals. Reliable heat. Simple cleanup.
🍳 Windproof Camping Gas Stove
Critical for windy mornings. Regular stoves struggle out there.
🍳 Propane Splitter with Gauge + 4ft Hose
This setup let me:
- Run multiple propane devices
- Monitor fuel levels
- Avoid running out unexpectedly
That gauge matters more than you think.
🍳 Cooking Extras That Helped
Small things that made a difference:
- Salt
- Pepper
- Sugar
- A couple pairs of tongs
- Small spatula
- One 8-inch nonstick pan (great for eggs or reheating canned food)
🥫 Food That Actually Worked Well
These held up great:
- Canned beans
- Canned vegetables
- Tortillas
- Precooked sliced frozen chicken
- Lots of snack bars
It’s recommended to bring one gallon of water per person per day just for drinking. Personally, I didn’t drink quite that much — but always overestimate.
☕ Coffee Setup
If you want simple — bring instant coffee.
If you actually want to brew coffee, bring a French press (4 or 8 cup works great).
For cups:
Option 1: Lightweight aluminum camping cup you can clip to your backpack (no lid).
Option 2: Insulated tumbler with lid — better for keeping drinks cold while exploring the playa.
🍳 72QT Igloo Marine Cooler
Desert heat is brutal.
The Igloo Marine insulated hard shell cooler held ice longer than expected. Ice is available at Burning Man — but you don’t want to be buying it daily.
A 72-quart cooler was enough for two people, most beverages, and a few perishables.
Bonus tip:
Capture the melting ice water. That becomes free shower water.

Shower Setup (Yes, You Can Shower)
You don’t have to suffer.
Here’s the simple playa shower system:
🚿 Wolfwise Pop Up Shower Tent
Private. Quick setup. Folds down easily.
🚿 48” Kiddie Pool (Water Catch)
Used as a shower base to catch grey water.
Burning Man is strict about Leave No Trace — you must manage your water.
We elevated ours slightly using scrap 2×4 blocks and a piece of plywood so we weren’t standing in dirty water.
Highly recommend that extra step.
🚿 Electric Shower Pump
Game changer. No gravity-only drip showers.
🚿 Solar Camping Shower Bag
Heats water during the day. Free hot water from the sun.
Plan on roughly one gallon of water per shower per day.
If you’re roughing it:
Baby wipes or sponge baths will work — but the shower hits different by Day 4.

Transportation & Storage (Highly Underrated)
Space is ALWAYS limited.
If you don’t have a trailer hitch yet, Burning Man might be the reason to get one.
🚙 Trailer Hitch Setup
Adding a hitch opens up options:
Cargo basket
Hitch rack
Or towing a small trailer
If you only have a Class I (1.25”) hitch, you can buy an adapter that converts it to 2” so you can run standard cargo baskets.
🚙 Folding Luggage Rack for Car Hitch
Extra storage space = less crammed vehicle interior.
Trust me, by the time you pack water, tents, food, and gear… you’ll understand.
Also worth considering:
Dry boxes
Rooftop cargo carrier
Storage bins
Bike & Visibility
You will live on your bike.
Minimum:
✔ Front headlight
Please don’t skip this.
Recommended:
✔ LED spoke lights
✔ Saddlebags
✔ Medium backpack with camelback water bladder (daytime)
✔ Sling crossbody bag (nighttime essentials)
Clothing (Don’t Overpack Like We Did)
We brought way too many costumes and didn’t wear half of them.
Be realistic.
Shoes:
Only bring 2 pairs. That’s it.
Bring at least 2 pairs of socks per day so you can swap between day and night.
You’ll want:
✔ One medium-heavy jacket (it gets cold)
✔ Daytime: shorts, tanks, lightweight outfits
✔ Night: layered pieces, statement jackets
You do not need a brand-new costume every day unless you’re tight on space and planning for it intentionally.
Tips To Keep in Mind
✔ Inflatable tent — fast setup, strong structure
✔ Heavy duty stakes — non-negotiable
✔ Proper propane setup with gauge
✔ Dedicated shower system
✔ Hitch storage solution
✔ Capture melting cooler ice water — free shower water
✔ Only bring 2 pairs of shoes
What Most First-Timers Underestimate
- Wind
- Dust infiltration
- Cold nights
- Storage space
- Fuel consumption
- Ice needs
- Sleep quality
Prepare correctly, and the week feels amazing.
Prepare poorly, and it feels long.

Final Thoughts
Burning Man isn’t about roughing it for the sake of it.
It’s about preparing well so you can actually enjoy the art, the people, and the experience.
Build a setup that:
Survives wind
Handles heat
Manages water
Protects sleep
Maximizes vehicle space
This is what I personally used, tested, and would bring again.
